Herbalism Chart Empty Herbalism Chart

Here is Walter's Herbalism chart and directions Smile

http://www.astrolog.org/other/MyFairyHerb.xls (Empty Herbalism chart for Excel)
http://www.astrolog.org/other/MyFairyHerb.doc (Empty Herbalism chart for Word)

I've updated the Herbalism charts again with a table of the right wands to use. In the Excel spreadsheet the wands are listed in the new "Wand Spoiler" tab. (The herb and wand names are color coded for extra visibility. Smile If a fairy doesn't want to be spoiled, they can just stick to the main "My Recipes" tab. In the Word document the wands are listed after the recipe table, so a fairy that doesn't want to be spoiled needs to avoid looking there. When this Herbalism chart was first made, we didn't know the right wands to use yet. However now that they are known it's of course logical to add the info to the file designed to help you find your Elixirs. Smile

For each Herb, there are 4 liquid combos, 4 dust combos, and 5 wand combos, for 80 combos total to cover to find the Magical Elixir for that herb.

What's interesting about Herbology is that when you try a combo, you get a number of gold telling you how many parts of the formula (other than the Herb itself) you got right. For example, if the proper combo is (Unicorn Milk, Sparkle Dust, Herb, Standard Wand) and I try (Faery Firewater, Sparkle Dust, Herb, Standard Wand) then I get 2 gold, letting me know 2 out of 3 items are right. This is similar to the peg game "MasterMind" if people have played that.

When you try one of the 80 combos, if you don't get it right, you know that a number of other combos can NOT produce the elixir, because they have the wrong number of items different from what you tried. For example, if I try (Swamp Water, Love Dust, Herb, Naughty Wand) and get 1 gold, then I know the elixir can NOT be (Swamp Water, Sunshine Dust, Herb, Naughty Wand) because that matches the combo I tried in 2 places, where getting 1 gold means the elixir will only match in 1 place.

A large number of combos can be invalidated no matter how many gold you get from an Herbalism attempt. Specifically:
0 gold means: 44 combos invalidated & 36 combos left.
1 gold means: 47 combos invalidated & 33 combos left.
2 gold means: 70 combos invalidated & 10 combos left.

My Excel spreadsheet version of the chart will automatically do all this invalidation for you! It contains a column for "Possible that this combo can be the elixir" which contains TRUE or FALSE. After an Herbalism attempt you simply fill out how much gold you got in the "Result" column, and watch as a number of other combos for that herb automatically change to FALSE, meaning you no longer need to try them.

If you go to this website http://www.openoffice.org you can download a spreadsheet program which will be able to open excel files. Hopefully that helps!

i don't know about uploading to google documents, but i will ask what operating system you're using, i'm using a Mac running OS X 10.4.11 and i have to say that OpenOffice was a bit of a task, as after all the preamble of telling me that it would do this and that, it told me (after installing it) that i needed to install some X-11 program that was on my original install disc, then it told me that OpenOffice Aqua didn't need this installation with my system.
so i wasted an hour there and after clicking to install the Aqua program it would display a screen of ascii symbols and do nothing further.
this may well not be the case with your operating system but i've been away looking in to this and i've discovered an excellent program for Mac called NeoOffice it's available at http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php
i've checked it and it works super fine for both the .doc file (which is about as useful as a pen and paper) and the .xls file (which is actually very good:), it does ask to be updated as soon as it's first opened but that is quite pain a free procedure.
